Does Streamer access require special software?
  • No. It's easy! All you need is a Datek Online account and a browser that supports Java 1.1 completely. A few qualified browsers include Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, Netscape's Communicator 4.5 or later, and Sun's HotJava.

    Can Professional Users access Streamer?
  • Yes. Professional Users subscribed to Nasdaq Quote Service through Datek can use Streamer to display real-time Nasdaq quotes. To subscribe to Nasdaq quotes, select Subscription Services from the Account Options pull-down menu (located on the Datek Investment Site). Once subscribed, simply activate the service by accessing a minimum of one static quote per month through the Datek Online Quotes & Trades page. Streamer becomes accessible approximately 48 hours after you activate your Nasdaq quote service. For more information about Professional Users click here.

For which markets does Streamer display quotes?
  • Streamer displays quotes for Nasdaq National Market System and Small Cap, New York Stock Exchange, and American Stock Exchange stocks.

Does Streamer display major market indexes quotes?
  • Not at this time. This feature is important to Streamer's development into a complete resource for real-time market data, and we hope to include it in our next version.
Logging In
Do I need a separate UserName and Password to login to Streamer?
  • No. Login with the UserName and Password you use to login to the Datek Investment and Classic sites.

Does changing my Password affect my ability to login to Streamer?
  • No. However, Streamer takes approximately 48 business hours (from the time that your Password becomes valid for logging in to the Datek sites) to recognize your new Password. Until Streamer recognizes the change, please continue to login with your former Password.

Why do I receive an "incorrect UserName" message while logging into Streamer?

  • Your Datek Online account may be:

  • In the three-week trail period or in on-hold status--Only customers with active accounts have access to Streamer. After activation of your Datek Online account, Streamer takes approximately 48 business hours to recognize your UserName.
  • A Professional User account--Professional Users subscribed to Nasdaq Quote Service through Datek Online may use Streamer to display real-time Nasdaq quotes. To subscribe to Nasdaq quotes, select Subscription Services from the Account Options pull-down menu (located on the Datek Investment Site). Once subscribed, simply activate the service by accessing a minimum of one static quote per month through the Datek Online Quotes & Trades page. After you activate your Nasdaq quote service, Streamer takes approximately 48 business hours to recognize your UserName. For more information about Professional Users, click here.

Why do I receive an "incorrect Password" message while logging into Streamer?
  • This may be the result of a recent Password change. Streamer takes approximately 48 business hours (from the time that your Password becomes valid for logging into the Datek sites) to recognize your new Password. Until Streamer recognizes the change, please continue to login with your former Password.
Understanding the Display
How do I learn more about Streamer from within the display window itself?
  • By moving your mouse around within the display, you prompt helpful "roll-over" messages specific to the area of the display that your mouse is "rolling over". These messages appear in the bottom right of the display window.

How do I begin receiving Streaming quotes?
  • After logging into Streamer, simply click the Add button and enter stock symbols into the display. Then click the OK button to begin receiving streaming quotes for the stocks you entered.

How do I add more stocks to an already streaming display?
  • Simply click the Add button again, enter the additional symbols, and click OK. To return to your display without the additional stocks, simply click the Cancel button.

How do I remove stocks from the display?
  • Click on the stock symbol (or anywhere on its row) you wish to remove and drag it to the trashcan located in the display's bottom right corner. Keep dragging the stock until the trash can's outline changes from green to red. Then simply drop.

For how many stocks can I simultaneously receive streaming quotes?
  • The Streamer display accepts up to 20 different stock symbols at one time. When quotes are already updating for the maximum number of stocks, the Add button becomes inactive. To make the Add button active again, simply remove one or more of the current stocks from the display.

Does Streamer remember the stocks I asked for from session to session?
  • Not at this time. We are working towards making Streamer store the quotes you requested during your previous session and hope to include this feature in our next version.

How do I change the order in which the stocks appear in an already streaming display?
  • Move stocks around within the display by clicking the symbols (or anywhere on their rows) and dragging to a new location.

How do I change the order of the quote fields in the display?
  • Click on the column headers and drag to the preferred locations. As you drag, a white horizontal bar follows, showing you each location where you may drop.

How do I customize the display's appearance?
  • Click the Settings button to choose display fields, font size, and even the colors. Your preferences remain visible for the current Streamer session only.

What does it mean when the bid and ask flash green or red?
  • When the current bid or ask is higher than the previous bid or ask, the fields flash green. Conversely, these fields flash red if the current bid or ask is lower than the previous bid or ask.

What does it mean when the stock symbol flashes green or red?
  • The symbol flashes green when the bid is equal to or greater than the daily high, and flashes red when the ask is equal to or less than the daily low.

What does it mean when the high and low flash yellow?
  • The high and low fields flash yellow when a new daily high or daily low is reached.

Why does the light in the Datek logo flash different colors?
  • This light indicates the status of your Streamer connection. Specifically:
  • Green means the display is connected to the Streamer server.
  • Red means the display is not connected to the Streamer server, and is not receiving quote updates.
  • Yellow means the display is trying to connect to the Streamer server.

Please note that the light blinks green each time Streamer receives a quote update, and should blink at least once every 5 seconds while the display is connected to the Streamer server. For additional information regarding your Streamer connection click the Datek logo.

Technical Help
What browser's are compatible with Streamer?
Streamer requires a browser that supports Java 1.1 completely. A few qualified browsers include Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, Netscape's Communicator 4.5 or later, and Sun's HotJava.
  • To check your browser version, use the About option of the Help menu and if necessary, download a compatible browser from one of the following links:
  • MS Internet Explorer 4.0
  • Netscape's Communicator 4.5
  • Sun's Hot Java

What if the Streamer quote display never appears onscreen?
  • This may indicate your browser does not support Java 1.1 completely. Check the above list to make sure you are using a compatible browser.

On which platforms can Streamer run?
  • Netscape's Communicator 4.5 supports Streamer on the following platforms:
  • Solaris 2.4 and 2.5.1
  • IRIX 6.2
  • HP UX 10
  • AIX 4.1
  • Linux
  • Apple Macintosh
  • Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01 supports Streamer on the following platforms:
  • Windows 95 and NT
  • Windows NT on DEC Alpha
  • Windows 3.1 and NT 3.51
  • Apple Macintosh
  • Sun Solaris (Unix)
  • Hewlett-Packard HP-UX (Unix)
  • Sun's HotJava supports Streamer on the following platforms:
  • Sun Solaris (Unix)
  • Windows 95 and NT
  • Platforms with Java 1.1 JVM.

Why does Streamer disappear when I shut down my browser?
  • Streamer is a Java applet launched, and run, from a browser. This means the browser window must remain running to display it (or any other Java applet). If you exit the browser running Streamer, the applet exits also. To clear space on your desktop, try shrinking the browser window or minimizing it to the task bar.

Can I "surf" the Internet or trade from the Streamer browser?
  • To ensure that Streamer continues running and updating quotes properly, we suggest you open a new browser window or use any other open browser window to continue "surfing" and/or trading. Streamer automatically opens in a new browser window when you connect from a link on the Datek Site.

Does Streamer have any known "bugs"?
  • Streamer occasionally exhibits the rare and mysterious "hideously enlarged trash can" syndrome. The main symptom? The trashcan located within the display becomes very large, covering a portion of the quote data, and causing the display to freeze (that is, loose its connection to the server). This happens infrequently, and at this time, the cause is not known. If you experience this, please shut down your browser entirely before logging back into Streamer.
